Before You Know My Story
Before you know where I'm going, I want you to understand where I've been—and why every chapter, no matter how painful, can become part of something greater.
There is something I've learned over the years that I wish someone had told me much earlier…
Our stories don't lose their power because we keep them hidden.
They lose their purpose.
For a long time, I believed my past was something to survive, not something to share.
Some memories carried shame.
Some carried anger.
Some carried grief.
Some carried questions that still don't have perfect answers.
Like many people, I convinced myself that silence was safer.
If I didn't revisit certain moments, maybe they couldn't continue to shape me.
But life has a way of teaching us that what remains buried doesn't always remain healed.
So why am I finally telling this story?
Because I believe every person has a story worth telling.
Not because every story is easy.
Not because every chapter has a happy ending.
But because someone else may be waiting for the courage that your honesty can give them.
If my story can help one father become more present…
If it can help one son believe he isn't defined by what happened to him…
If it can help one mother feel less alone…
If it can remind one person that there is still hope after loss…
Then every difficult memory will have found a greater purpose.
I don't want this book to become a collection of painful moments.
I want it to become a collection of redeemed moments.
Because there is a difference.
Pain by itself doesn't transform us.
What we choose to do with our pain does.
As I began reflecting on my life, I realized something that changed the way I looked at every chapter I've lived.
I've spent years trying to understand why certain things happened.
Why this family.
Why those experiences.
Why those losses.
Why so much uncertainty.
Today, I don't know that every "why" has an answer.
But I do believe every experience has the potential to become an offering.
This isn't a story about having life figured out.
I'm still learning.
I'm still healing.
I'm still becoming.
And maybe that's exactly why now feels like the right time to begin.
I'm not writing from the finish line.
I'm writing from the journey.
One of the greatest gifts I hope this becomes is something far more personal than a book sitting on a shelf.
One day, long after I'm gone, I hope my children can open these pages and hear my voice again.
I hope they'll understand not only what I lived through, but what I believed while I was living through it.
I hope they'll discover that courage isn't the absence of fear.
That forgiveness isn't weakness.
That faith isn't pretending life isn't difficult.
And that becoming the person God created you to be is rarely a straight path.
If I could leave my children anything beyond possessions, I would choose perspective.
I would choose wisdom earned through mistakes.
I would choose stories instead of trophies.
Because stories have a way of continuing to teach long after we're gone.
Growing up, I often wished someone had handed me a blueprint for life.
Not instructions on how to avoid pain.
Those don't exist.
But a guide for navigating it.
A reminder that storms don't last forever.
A reminder that identity isn't determined by childhood.
A reminder that broken things can become beautiful again.
I searched for that blueprint in many places.
Sometimes in people.
Sometimes in achievement.
Sometimes in success.
Sometimes in anything that promised certainty.
What I've come to understand is that life doesn't hand us a completed blueprint.
We build it one decision at a time.
One act of forgiveness.
One choice to keep going.
One conversation.
One prayer.
One day.
That's what these pages are meant to become.
Not instructions.
Not answers.
A companion for the journey.
If you've picked up this story hoping to find someone who has everything figured out, you'll probably be disappointed.
But if you're looking for proof that healing is possible…
That fathers can choose a different legacy.
That purpose can grow from pain.
That faith can survive doubt.
That hope can outlive heartbreak.
Then I hope you'll keep reading.
Before you know my story…
I want you to know this:
I don't believe what happened to us has the final word.
I believe what we choose to become does.
So this is where we'll begin.
Not with perfection.
Not with certainty.
Just with the truth.
You don't have to become a product of your environment, but you can become a testimony.
Tomorrow, I'll introduce you to the little boy who had no idea how much his life was about to change.
